Starting the camera…

Stand about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) in front of a plain light wall, so no shadow falls on it, with the camera about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) from you. Face a window, remove glasses and keep a neutral face. The guide tells you when you are at the right distance from the camera. The camera image is analyzed on your device and is never recorded or uploaded.

    How to make a 1 × 1 inch photo

    1. Upload a photo or take one with the camera, facing straight ahead in front of a plain wall.
    2. The crop is fitted to 1×1 inch with your head at 12.7–17.5 mm (50–69% of the height); pick your document in the list if it has its own rules.
    3. Choose the background color, press “Create photo”, then download the 300×300 px file or a 4×6 in, 5×7 in or A4 print sheet.

“Unconfirmed or guideline”: a size has no single official rule, so these values come from the named source for a document of this size or shape.

Which documents use 1×1 inch photos

None of the passport and visa documents on Picsawa uses exactly 1 × 1 in (25 × 25 mm). Use the size your form asks for, and its head size or example photo if it gives one.

About the 1 × 1 inch photo maker tool

A 1 × 1 inch photo is a small square photo, about 25 × 25 mm. It is often asked for on ID cards, school and work forms and some applications where space on the card is tight. At 300 DPI it is 300 × 300 pixels, which is the file this page makes and the size it prints at.

There is no single official rule for 1 × 1 inch photos: each form or office decides. This page uses the proportions of the well-known U.S. 2 × 2 inch photo template, scaled down: the head, from the top of the hair to the chin, fills 50 to 69% of the photo height. If your form shows its own example or gives a head size, adjust the crop with the zoom and drag until your photo matches it, then create the photo.

Small photos show every flaw, so start from a sharp original: a photo from your phone's main camera, not a screenshot. Face the camera straight on in soft, even light, with a neutral expression. The maker replaces the background with plain white by default; choose off-white, light grey or light blue if your form asks for a color.

Because each photo is small, a print sheet holds a lot of them. Pick a layout under the finished photo: a 4 × 6 inch print, a 5 × 7 inch print or an A4 page. The tool shows how many photos fit on each, leaves a gap between them, and adds cut marks so you can cut them out straight with a ruler and craft knife. Print at 100% or “actual size”, never “fit to page”, then measure one photo: it should be 1 inch (25.4 mm) wide.

Need a different small size, such as 3 × 4 cm? There is a page for that too, and the document list above the upload box covers passport and visa photos with their official rules.

    Frequently asked questions

How many pixels is a 1×1 inch photo?

300 × 300 pixels at 300 DPI. Printed at 100% (actual size), that is exactly 1 inch (about 25 mm) on each side.

How many 1×1 photos fit on a 4×6 print?

Many more than 2 × 2 photos: the tool shows the exact count for a 4 × 6 in, 5 × 7 in and A4 sheet, with a small gap and cut marks between the photos.

    Can I just shrink a 2×2 photo to 1×1?

Often yes, if the form only gives the size: both are square. If the form gives its own head size or framing, follow it and adjust the crop here before you create the photo.
