Starting the camera…

Stand about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) in front of a plain light wall, so no shadow falls on it, with the camera about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) from you. Face a window, remove glasses and keep a neutral face. The guide tells you when you are at the right distance from the camera. The camera image is analyzed on your device and is never recorded or uploaded.

About the 35 × 45 mm photo maker tool

35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm, or about 1.38 × 1.77 inches) is the most widely used passport photo size: an upright rectangle a little taller than it is wide. At 300 DPI it is 413 × 531 pixels, and that is the file this page makes. Upload a photo or take one with the camera; the maker finds your face, crops to the right shape and sizes your head.

Many countries base their rules on the guidance of ICAO, the UN agency for travel documents. Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs publishes it in plain numbers: the head, from the chin to the crown (the top of the head, not the top of the hair), should measure 32 to 36 mm, which is 70 to 80% of the photo height. This page uses that range as its guideline. Some offices measure differently or allow a wider range, so if your document is in the list above the upload box, choose it: the crop and the checks then follow that document instead.

Backgrounds for 35 × 45 mm photos are usually plain and light: white, off-white, cream or light grey, depending on the document. The maker replaces the background evenly, without shadows, and you choose the color. A light blue option is there for the forms that ask for it.

For prints, pick a layout under the finished photo. A 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm) print holds eight 35 × 45 mm photos, a 5 × 7 inch print holds ten, and an A4 page fills a sheet for a home printer. Every layout is built at 300 DPI with cut marks in the margins. Print at 100% or “actual size”, never “fit to page”, then check one photo with a ruler: it should measure exactly 35 mm across.

A good photo starts before the crop. Face the camera straight on in soft daylight, keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed, push hair away from your eyes and take glasses off. A photo from a phone's main camera at arm's length or more works better than a close-up selfie, which makes the nose look larger.

    Frequently asked questions

How many pixels is a 35 × 45 mm photo?

413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI. That is the file this page makes, so printing it at 100% (actual size) gives a photo of exactly 35 × 45 mm.

    Is 35 × 45 mm the same as 3.5 × 4.5 cm or 1.38 × 1.77 inches?

Yes, all three describe the same photo: 35 mm wide and 45 mm high. It is not the same as a 2 × 2 inch photo, which is square.

How big should the head be in a 35 × 45 mm photo?

Under the ICAO guideline used here, 32–36 mm from the chin to the crown (the top of the head, not the hair), which is 70–80% of the photo height. Some documents ask for a slightly different range, so choose your document in the list if it is there.
