About the 600 × 600 pixel photo maker tool
A 600 × 600 pixel photo is a square digital photo. Online application forms ask for it by pixels rather than by size on paper, because the file is uploaded rather than printed. This page makes exactly that: a square JPEG, 600 pixels on each side, with your face centered and your head sized to the guideline. Upload a photo or take one with the camera; nothing leaves your device.
The guideline comes from the U.S. State Department's photo composition template for 600 × 600 pixel photos: the head, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, fills 50 to 69% of the photo height, and the eyes sit between 56 and 69% of the height, measured from the bottom. If the form you are filling in belongs to a document in the list above the upload box, choose it there and the maker uses that document's rules instead.
Upload forms are strict about the file, not just the face. The photo from this page is a standard color JPEG in the sRGB color space, at 300 DPI, so it also prints correctly. Many forms set a maximum file size; the DV Lottery entry form, for example, takes no more than 240 kB. If your form's limit is lower than the file you get, use the free compressor: it keeps the 600 × 600 pixels and only reduces the file.
At 300 DPI, 600 pixels is exactly 2 inches, so the same file prints as a 2 × 2 inch photo. If you also need paper copies, choose a print layout under the finished photo: six fit on a 4 × 6 inch print, with cut marks.
For a sharp result, start from a photo taken with your phone's main camera, not a screenshot or a photo sent through a chat app: those are often too small, and enlarging them makes the face blurry. Stand facing a plain wall in soft light, look straight at the camera and keep a neutral expression.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a photo exactly 600 × 600 pixels?
Upload your photo here: the maker crops a square around your face and saves exactly 600 × 600 pixels as a JPEG, with the head sized to the guideline. Nothing is uploaded; it all happens in your browser.
My form also limits the file size. What can I do?
The photo from this page is usually well under 250 kB. If your form asks for less, compress it with the free Compress to Exact Size tool: the pixel size stays 600 × 600.
Can I print a 600 × 600 photo?
Yes. At 300 DPI it prints at exactly 2 × 2 inches. Choose a print layout under the finished photo and print at 100% (actual size).
