About the India visa photo maker tool
An Indian visa application made online asks you to upload a digital photo, and photos that don’t meet the rules are a common reason applications are held up. The rules published by the High Commission of India are short: a JPEG file of 10 to 300 KB, exactly as tall as it is wide, on a plain white background with no shadows and no borders, showing your full face from the front with your eyes open and your head in the middle of the frame. Your head, from the top of your hair to the bottom of your chin, must measure 25 to 35 mm, or 1 to 1⅜ inches.
This tool takes care of the measurable parts. It finds your face, crops the photo to a square with your head at the right size, can replace the background with plain white without touching your face, and saves a JPEG that stays under 300 KB. The checklist below the result tells you what passed and what to look at yourself, such as shadows on your face or closed eyes.
For the best result, stand about a metre in front of a plain light wall, face a window for soft, even light, and have someone take the photo from the same distance at eye level. Remove glasses, keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed, and keep hair away from your eyes. A phone camera is fine; avoid selfies at arm’s length, which make faces look wider. If you also need prints for a paper form, the requirements ask for 3.5 × 3.5 cm photos with the same rules, and the print sheet can be resized at a photo shop.
Frequently asked questions
What size is an India visa photo?
2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm), which is 600×600 pixels at 300 DPI. The head, measured from the top of your hair to your chin, must be 1–1⅜ in (25–35 mm), top of hair to chin (49%–69% of the height). Background: plain white, with no shadows on the face or background and no borders.
Where do these Indian visa photo rules come from?
From the “Requirement for Digital Photograph to upload” published by the High Commission of India in Islamabad for online Indian visa applications: a JPEG of 10 to 300 KB with equal height and width, a plain white background without shadows or borders, a full-face front view with eyes open and the head centered, and a head of 25–35 mm from the top of the hair to the chin.
Why 2 × 2 inches when the requirements say “square”?
The requirements ask for a square photo with a head of 25–35 mm (1 to 1⅜ inches), which is the head size used for 2 × 2 inch photos, so the tool makes a 600 × 600 px square at 300 DPI. They don’t name a pixel size; a different size of the same square shape also meets the rule.
Does this work for the Indian e-Visa?
The e-Visa site, indianvisaonline.gov.in, publishes its own photo instructions, and we could not read them during our last check. Compare them with this page before you upload.
Can I wear glasses in an India visa photo?
Not mentioned; best removed.
