Take the photo

Starting the camera…

Stand about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) in front of a plain light wall, so no shadow falls on it, with the camera about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) from you. Face a window, remove glasses and keep a neutral face. The guide tells you when you are at the right distance from the camera. The camera image is analyzed on your device and is never recorded or uploaded.

How to make a passport or visa photo

    1. Choose your document, then upload a recent, front-facing photo or take one in front of a plain light wall.
    2. Your face is detected and the crop is fitted to the document size. Adjust the zoom and position if needed.
    3. Choose a background, create the photo, review the checklist and download it or a 4×6 in print sheet.

About the Passport & Visa Photo Maker tool

Every country has its own photo size and head size: a U.S. passport photo is 2×2 inches with the head 1 to 1⅜ inches from the top of the hair, while UK, Australian and Schengen photos are 35×45 mm with the head measured from the chin to the crown. Pick your document and the crop, guides and checks follow its rules.

Each document’s requirements are listed below with a link to the official source and the date we last checked it. Rules marked as unconfirmed come from secondary sources, so double-check them before you apply.

Photos are saved at 300 DPI so they print at exactly the right size. The print sheet fits as many copies as possible on a standard 4×6 in (10×15 cm) photo print. Your photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

    Frequently asked questions

    Which documents are supported?

    U.S. passport photo (2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm)), U.S. visa photo (600 × 600 px digital photo (2 × 2 in printed)), UK passport photo (35 × 45 mm), Canada passport photo (50 × 70 mm (2 × 2¾ in)), Australia passport photo (35 × 45 mm), Schengen area visa photo (35 × 45 mm), China visa photo (33 × 48 mm), Ethiopia e-visa photo (2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm)). For the U.S. green card lottery, use the DV Lottery Photo Tool.

Can I print the photos at home?

Yes. Download the print sheet and print it at 100% size (actual size, not “fit to page”) on glossy photo paper, or order a standard 4×6 print at a photo shop, which is usually cheaper and better quality. Then cut along the edges.

    Will my photo be accepted?

The tool crops to the official measurements and checks the rules it can measure, but the passport or visa office makes the final decision. Good lighting, a plain background, a neutral expression and no glasses give you the best chance.

Is it allowed to change the background?

Replacing only the background is a common fix, and the tool never edits your face. Some offices prefer photos taken against a real plain wall, so if you can, take the photo in front of one.

    Is my photo uploaded?

No. Face detection and all image processing run in your browser. The photo never leaves your device.

Not an official tool. This tool is not affiliated with any government. The final decision is made by the passport or visa office. Always check the official rules for your document before you apply.
