Starting the camera…

Stand about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) in front of a plain light wall, so no shadow falls on it, with the camera about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) from you. Face a window, remove glasses and keep a neutral face. The guide tells you when you are at the right distance from the camera. The camera image is analyzed on your device and is never recorded or uploaded.

About the 2 × 2 inch photo maker tool

A 2 × 2 inch photo is a square photo, 51 × 51 mm. Printed at 300 DPI (dots per inch, the standard for photo labs) it is 600 × 600 pixels, which is exactly the file this page makes. Upload a photo or take one with the camera, and the maker finds your face, crops a square around it and sizes your head to fit.

No single rule covers every 2 × 2 photo, because each office writes its own. This page uses the U.S. passport rule as its guideline, because it is the best-known 2 × 2 photo: the head, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, measures 1 to 1⅜ inches (25 to 35 mm), and the eyes sit 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches above the bottom edge. If your document is in the list above the upload box, choose it there: the crop, the background colors and the checks then follow that document's own rules.

Most 2 × 2 photos need a plain white or off-white background with no shadows. The maker replaces the background for you, and you can pick light grey or light blue when a form asks for a colored background. Only the background changes; your face is not retouched.

To print, choose a layout under the finished photo. A 4 × 6 inch print (10 × 15 cm), the cheapest size at most photo kiosks, holds six 2 × 2 photos with no gap, so one print gives you six copies. You can also make a 5 × 7 inch print or an A4 page for a home printer. Each sheet has cut marks in the margins and is built at 300 DPI. Print it at 100% or “actual size”, never “fit to page”, or the photos come out the wrong size. Measure one photo with a ruler before you cut them all.

Need the digital file for an online form? The same 600 × 600 pixel JPEG works for many upload forms. Some forms limit the file size; if yours does, the free compressor can bring the file under the limit without changing the pixel size.

    Frequently asked questions

How many pixels is a 2×2 photo?

600 × 600 pixels at 300 DPI, the resolution photo labs print at. The file this page makes is exactly that, so it prints at 2 × 2 inches when printed at 100% (actual size).

How many 2×2 photos fit on a 4×6 print?

Six, in two rows of three with no gap between them. A 5 × 7 in print holds more, and an A4 page many more; the tool shows the count for each layout and adds cut marks.

    Is a 2×2 photo the same as a 51 × 51 mm photo?

Practically yes: 2 inches is 50.8 mm, and many forms round it to 51 mm. The difference of 0.2 mm is smaller than a print lab's cutting tolerance.
