About the 4 × 6 cm photo maker tool
A 4 × 6 cm photo is 40 mm wide and 60 mm high: taller than a passport photo, showing your head and the top of your shoulders. It is asked for on some visa and residence forms, certificates, school records and exam registrations. At 300 DPI it is 472 × 709 pixels, which is the file this page makes.
It is easy to mix up with a 4 × 6 inch print. A 4 × 6 inch print (10 × 15 cm) is the standard size of photo paper at print kiosks, not an ID photo size. This page makes the small 4 × 6 cm photo, and it can then lay several of them out on one 4 × 6 inch print to save money.
There is no single official rule for 4 × 6 cm photos. Because the photo is tall, the head fills a smaller share of it than in a 35 × 45 mm passport photo. This page uses the proportions of the Canadian 50 × 70 mm passport photo, the best-known tall format with official numbers: chin to crown 44 to 51% of the height, which is 26.5 to 31 mm on a 60 mm photo. If your form gives its own head size or shows an example, adjust the crop with the zoom and drag until it matches.
Backgrounds are usually plain white or light. The maker replaces the background evenly; choose light grey or off-white for a light background, or light blue if your form asks for blue. Wear a top with a neutral color that stands out from the background, since your shoulders show in this format.
To print, choose a layout under the finished photo: a 4 × 6 inch print, a 5 × 7 inch print or an A4 page. The tool shows how many photos fit and adds cut marks. Print at 100% or “actual size”, never “fit to page”, and check one photo with a ruler: it should be 40 mm wide and 60 mm high.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 4×6 cm photo the same as a 4×6 print?
No. A 4 × 6 cm photo is 40 × 60 mm, a small ID photo. A “4 × 6 print” usually means 4 × 6 inches (10 × 15 cm), the photo paper size that print kiosks use; this page can put several 4 × 6 cm photos on one 4 × 6 inch print.
How many pixels is a 4×6 cm photo?
472 × 709 pixels at 300 DPI. Printed at 100% (actual size), it measures 40 × 60 mm.
How much of a 4×6 cm photo should the head fill?
Less than in a passport photo, because the photo is taller and shows the shoulders. This page uses a guideline of 44–51% of the height from chin to crown; follow your form if it gives its own size.
