Starting the camera…

Stand about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) in front of a plain light wall, so no shadow falls on it, with the camera about 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) from you. Face a window, remove glasses and keep a neutral face. The guide tells you when you are at the right distance from the camera. The camera image is analyzed on your device and is never recorded or uploaded.

About the Passport & Visa Photo Maker tool

Every country has its own photo size and head size: a U.S. passport photo is 2×2 inches with the head 1 to 1⅜ inches from the top of the hair, while UK, Australian and Schengen photos are 35×45 mm with the head measured from the chin to the crown. Pick your document and the crop, guides and checks follow its rules.

Each document’s requirements are listed below with a link to the official source and the date we last checked it. Rules marked as unconfirmed come from secondary sources, so double-check them before you apply.

Photos are saved at 300 DPI so they print at exactly the right size. Print sheets come in three layouts, a 4×6 in (10×15 cm) photo print, a 5×7 in print or an A4 page, each with as many copies as fit and cut marks in the margins. Your photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

    Frequently asked questions

    Which documents are supported?

    U.S. passport photo (2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm)), U.S. visa photo (600 × 600 px digital photo (2 × 2 in printed)), UK passport photo (35 × 45 mm), Canada passport photo (50 × 70 mm (2 × 2¾ in)), Australia passport photo (35 × 45 mm), Schengen area visa photo (35 × 45 mm), China visa photo (33 × 48 mm), Ethiopia e-visa photo (2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm)), Nigeria visa photo (35 × 45 mm), Kenya passport photo (5 × 5 cm (50 × 50 mm)), South Africa passport photo (35 × 45 mm), Uganda passport photo (35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm)), India visa photo (2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm)), Pakistan passport photo (35 × 45 mm), Nepal passport photo (35 × 45 mm), UAE visa photo (43 × 55 mm), Qatar visa photo (35 × 45 mm), El Salvador passport photo (2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm)). For the U.S. green card lottery, use the DV Lottery Photo Tool.

Can I print the photos at home?

Yes. Choose a 4×6 in, 5×7 in or A4 layout, download the print sheet (a JPG for 4×6 and 5×7, a PDF for A4) and print it at 100% size (actual size, not “fit to page”) on photo paper, or order a standard 4×6 print at a photo shop, which is usually cheaper and better quality. Then cut along the marks.

    Will my photo be accepted?

The tool crops to the official measurements and checks the rules it can measure, but the passport or visa office makes the final decision. Good lighting, a plain background, a neutral expression and no glasses give you the best chance.

Is it allowed to change the background?

Replacing only the background is a common fix, and the tool never edits your face. Some offices prefer photos taken against a real plain wall, so if you can, take the photo in front of one.

    Is my photo uploaded?

No. Face detection and all image processing run in your browser. The photo never leaves your device.
